I've Never Used a Recruitment Agency Before
Demystifying recruitment agencies.
Never used a recruitment agency before? Here’s how it actually works.
Are you wondering what we do, how we find candidates, what it costs, and what you can expect? Let us break it down.
What does a recruitment agency actually do?
We reduce risk, save time, and improve hiring outcomes.
You can recruit yourself. Most businesses try.
But it often looks like:
- Too many applications
- Too much time spent reviewing CVs
- Missed or slow hires
- Uncertainty about candidate quality
Our role is simple:
We find, assess, and present the right people, so you don’t have to do it alone. Instead of hundreds of CV's, you get a small number of properly vetted candidates worth meeting.
The essentials.

Where do we find candidates?
Great candidates aren't always actively applying for jobs. To find these candidates, we combine:
- Our existing candidate network
- Job board advertising
- Direct outreach to passive candidates
- Referrals and industry contacts
- Social media, display advertising and geofencing
This is why agencies often succeed where adverts alone don’t.
What makes a good recruitment agency?
Click each card to see what to look for (and what to avoid):
A good agency
- Challenges your brief when needed
- Is honest about candidates and the market
- Communicates regularly
- Understands your business
- Supports you and the candidate after placement
A poor agency
- Sends CVs quickly but not selectively
- Feels transactional
- Overpromises
- Disappears after placement
- Not interested in retention
Transparent pricing
How much does a recruitment agency cost?
Permanent hires: Typically 10-25% of salary.
Example: £30,000 salary = £3,000-£7,500 agency fee.
Temporary staff: Hourly margin
Example: you pay £15 an hour; the worker earns £13, the agency receives £2.
Why this amount?
The fee reflects our cost, including our market expertise, time recruiting, interviewing, vetting, supporting negotiations, supporting onboarding, plus the value of the hire (properly vetted and less likely to fail).

Left FAQ's
How does a recruitment agency work?
Recruitment agencies like Meridian manage part or all of the hiring process. You brief us on the role, and we source, screen and shortlist candidates who match your requirements.
Rather than reviewing dozens or hundreds of CVs, you receive a small number of candidates who have already been assessed for skills, experience and fit. We can also support with interview coordination, offer management, and onboarding, depending on how much support you need.
How much does it cost to hire through Meridian?
For permanent roles, fees are typically 15–30% of the candidate’s first-year salary, depending on the role, level, and hiring requirements. For temporary or contract staff, you pay an hourly rate that includes the worker’s pay, statutory costs, and our margin. All costs are agreed up front.
Most permanent placements also include a rebate or replacement period, giving you added protection if things don’t work out within an agreed timeframe.
How long does it take to hire?
Most roles are filled within 2–4 weeks from initial brief to offer acceptance. Timelines vary depending on factors such as the role complexity, salary, candidate availability and how quickly decisions are made. More specialist or senior hires often take longer, particularly where the talent pool is limited.
Is it worth using an agency for one hire?
Often, yes, particularly when the role has a direct impact on your team or business performance.
If hiring is time-consuming, you’re not seeing the right calibre of applicants, or the cost of a wrong hire is high, an agency can provide structure, market insight, and access to candidates you may not reach directly.

What are the benefits of using a recruitment agency?
The main advantages are speed, access, and reduced risk.
We can:
- Reach candidates beyond active job seekers, including those not applying to adverts
- Save you time by screening and qualifying applicants before you see them
- Provide market insight on salary, availability and hiring conditions
- Help avoid poor hires by focusing on fit as well as experience
For many businesses, that combination leads to better hires, faster.
Can agencies find specialists and senior people?
Yes. We recruit across all levels, from entry roles through to senior and director positions. Our expert consultants work across a variety of industries and have in-depth market insights to support your reach and employer brand attraction.
For specialist hires, we use targeted search and direct outreach to people who aren’t actively job hunting, which is often where the strongest candidates are. This approach is often necessary where niche skills or experience are required.
What if I have questions about a candidate?
Call us. You’ll have a dedicated contact who knows each candidate we present.
If you need more context, such as motivations, career history, or any concerns, we’ll share clear, balanced feedback so you can make an informed decision.
Can I negotiate the placement fee?
In some cases, yes.
If you’re hiring multiple roles, working exclusively with us, or looking to build a longer-term partnership, we can agree a structure that reflects that. We’ll discuss this early so expectations are clear on both sides.
