HWRC Area Supervisor

Working within the management team you will supervise operations at Buckinghamshire's network of Household Waste Recycling Centers ensuring that they are carried out in a safe working environment and cost effective manner, in accordance with Group policies, permits and contract, and in compliance with all statutory regulations and Contractual requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  1. To assist the Management Team in controlling and coordinating the safe and efficient operation of the sites in accordance with management instructions, health & safety and legislative requirements laid down in working plans, site and company procedures, planning permissions, waste management licenses etc, including as a minimum ensuring personal compliance with the above.
  2. To be aware of, and conversant with, the relevant details of the Waste Management Licenses, Working Plans, risk assessments and safe working procedures, COSHH assessments, emergency procedures and other relevant health, safety & environmental documents, and employment legislation as directed by Contract Manager. Assist and support the Contracts Manager in raising standards associated with these requirements.
  3. To protect the Company's ability to trade by ensuring compliance with relevant legislation at all times and especially that concerning health and safety in the workplace and the 'Duty of Care'
  4. To manage plant and resources, including site operatives, to optimise the safe and productive operation of the facilities.
  5. To ensure that paperwork and administration associated with the role is carried out in an accurate and timely manner.
  6. To ensure operation of mobile plant in a safe and efficient manner, in accordance with Group policies and procedures
  7. To ensure that all plant/equipment is operated, inspected and maintained in accordance with company and site rules and ensure that appropriate records are completed.
  8. To train and mentor site operatives and deal with performance management and disciplinary issues under guidance of the Contract Manager.
  9. To ensure that staff training requirements are met in line with company requirements
  10. To produce staff rosters and the provision of cover for planned/unplanned absence and operational cover.
  11. To review and maintain site documentation as required by company and ISO standards.
  12. To be courteous to customers and client representatives at all times, providing exemplary customer service.
  13. To liaise and cooperate with the clients representatives regarding operations and compliance with the contract requirements and KPI's.
  14. To undertake any other duties reasonably requested by FCC management, including working at other locations as required.
  15. Qualifications and Experience (preferred)
    • Experience of working in a waste/logistics/transport/maintenance operation in a team leader/supervisor capacity.
    • Experience of operating and working with heavy plant preferred.
    • Experience of working in an environment where safety has been given top priority.
    • Computer literate in Microsoft office and web based systems.
    • Good communication and numerate skills.
    • Positive attitude to and demonstrable drive to improve health and safety and compliance.
    • Experienced in working in customer / client focused operation.
    • Excellent time keeping is essential.
    • Experience in planning and working within a cost budget.
    • Operation of waste management / construction plant / materials handling machinery desirable.
    • COTC is highly desirable, or commitment to achieve COTC within 6 months essential
    • IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent is highly desirable
    • Experience of working in a waste/logistics/transport/maintenance operation in a team leader/supervisor capacity
    • Experience of working in customer / client focused operations essential
  • Experience in planning and working within a cost budget essentialPersonal Qualities

  • Strong leadership and personnel management skills. Capable of leading by example and motivating site team to raise standards and improve performance in all areas.
  • Hands on and practical approach to the smooth and efficient running of all operations and contracts activities.
  • Commitment and determination to meet personal and contract objectives in a timely manner. Strong drive and resilience.
  • Ability to coach and inspire staff
  • Ability to re-evaluate priorities, responding quickly and positively to change is imperative.
  • Performance driven with the ability to deliver added value and assist in the improvement of operational performance.
  • Sufficiently resilient and robust to effectively manage staff and third parties.
  • Able to engage and develop successful employees.
  • To act on own initiative but listen to the advice and requirements of others.

  • Flexibility with working hours, occasional periods of being on call or out of hours working will be expected.
  • To work within defined timescales and deadlines to comply with contract and company requirements

  • Current Driving licence

  • Strong change management skills
  • Ability to work individually, and as part of the team in order to achieve contract objectives is essential.

Other Information

  • Company vehicle will be provided for the role

  • Location - Based Calvert Near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.

  • Reporting to; Contract Manager

  • Working hours - Basic 39.5 hrs over 5 days some weekend working, or call out will be required to cover 7 day operation of the contract.
