Assistant Project Manager - London Underground - Central London

Our client, London's major transportation provider, are looking for an experienced Assistant Project Manager to join them on a 3 month contract in Central London. This role is part of the 4 Lines Modernisation programme, overseeing the works involved with increasing the service on the Metropolitan, Circle, District and Hammersmith & City lines to help deal with the increase in population of 1.4 Million people in London by 2030. This is a multi-billion pound programme to deliver larger replacement trains and signalling assets across the four lines. This work will include designing and implementing over 140km of cable route management systems, 51 new signalling equipment rooms and electrical infrastructure delivering all projects within a tightly controlled budget programme and matrix organisation structure.

The main duties of this role will involve the successful candidate being responsible for the Project Deliverables, from Concept to Handover. This will include the management of the design, procurement, construction and handover to the programme milestones. The successful candidate will be personally responsible for budgets of up to £2million, they will have day to day engagement with team and stakeholders, be involved in all aspects of project management (risk, commercial, cost, planning, ect), support project planning and periodic reporting activities as well as ensuring that the team members are provided with the information and resources they need in order to fulfil their responsibilities.

The ideal candidates for this role will be/have:


  • Appropriate Professional Qualification e.g. RICS, MICE, APMP, PRINCE
  • Degree in appropriate built environment subject (for example, engineering, project/construction or commercial management)
  • Civils/Power/Electrical experience
  • Full project lifecycle experience in a multidisciplinary construction / built environment setting
  • Proven track record in delivery
  • Experience of managing design and build construction projects
  • Experience in managing external suppliers in a construction environment
  • Must be pro-active and have the ability to work independently
  • Understanding of the impact of decisions on commercial and schedule
  • Knowledge of CDM and understanding of responsibilities
  • Previous experience of large scale infrastructure construction projects
  • Knowledge and experience of using the NEC 3 contract, including professional services
  • Ability to plan and manage tasks to time, budget and quality
  • Ability to analyse complex data, draw conclusions and produce reports
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people at all levels across the organisation and externally
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with people at all levels
  • Ability to plan and manage tasks to time, budget and quality
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)


  • Experience of London Underground
  • Experience of construction in multi-site locations and within the Rail Environment
  • A broad understanding of LU processes and procedures
