Medical Secretaries typically work for a senior member of staff or group of staff. Their role is to support the work of a department by taking on administrative and secretarial tasks such as typing, arranging meetings and taking minutes, arranging travel, taking phone calls, keeping a filing system, dealing with post and emails and creating and updating spreadsheets and databases.

Medical Secretaries can be based in clinical areas such as hospital departments, specialist clinics, including cancer centres, accident and emergency units or GP surgeries and health centres.They may have contact with service users and their families as well as with healthcare staff and other admin staff.

They may also be based in non-clinical areas such as NHS headquarters building, where there is little or no contact with service users.

Medical Secretaries may supervise a team of admin/secretarial staff such as clerks or typists.
