By the time you’ve read this article, I should probably change the title to “Social Media Users Raise $100k in 1 Day”.
Imgur users (self-style Imgurians) got behind Michelle Nagelvoort’s request for help to raise money for Ronan Winter who’s dying of Stage 4 Esophageal Cancer, when she posted the story on the popular social media site.
Michelle uploaded images of Ronan, with a moving story of his life and family under the title “I'm sorry Imgur, but I could use some help” in the faint hope that she might raise awareness and perhaps money to go towards the target of raising£100,000.
Within hours the post had over a thousand replies and the total donation on the gofundme page had rocketed. At the time of writing this blog, the post has over 212k views and over 2500 comments with $48,460 raised by 1724 people, many of whom are thought to be Imgurians. Everytime the donation page is refreshed the total goes up by a couple of hundred dollars and it might be the $100,000 goal is reached in less than two days, highlighting the magic of online social communities.
Imgur is an image sharing site, with many users sharing funny images and gifs.
